FUNDING FROM THE RESEARCH COUNCIL FOR A NEW PROJECT
 This summer, IMER Bergen got some pretty exciting news. A project led by Christine Jacobsen, director of the Center for Women's and Gender Research (SKOK) and board member at IMER, received funding through the Samkul program from the Research Council of Norway (NFR). Introducing the concept of waitinghood, the project will investigate how irregular migrants experience waitinghood - to live in a state where the future is uncertain. BERGEN MIGRATION WEEK: 24-28 OCTOBER
 In the last week of October, an exciting event will take place in Bergen. The IMER network is one of the organizers of Bergen Migration Week, along with CMI, SKOK, the Faculty of Law at UiB and the Bergen Resource Centre. For a full week there will be events and seminars on migration and responses to migration. The week kicks off on Monday 24th of October, at 19.30 at Litteraturhuset in Bergen. How does media coverage influence our perceptions of migration and refugees? Lars Petter Gallefoss, the director of the upcoming NRK series Flukt, will discuss with the matter with journalists Frøy Gudbrandsen and Christina Pletten. Next evening, on Tuesay 25th at 19.30 at Litteraturhuset, both Susanne Bygnes and Marry-Anne Karlsen will take part in a panel on "Seige systemer og ville ideer", where new solutions to early stage integration will be discussed. 27. NOVEMBER: POLISH LABOUR MIGRANTS AND UNDECLARED WORK IN NORWAY
How does labour migration from the EU-countries affect participation in undeclared work? Cornelius Cappelen and Ragnhild Muriaas from the Department of Comparative Politics are coming to the IMER lunch seminar to present findings from a recent study on Polish labor migrants in Norway, based on 74 qualitative interviews. Their findings imply that the experience of living transnational lives can be a motivator for participating in undeclared work.
13. DECEMBER: IMMIGRATION CONTROL IN THE MEDIA
How is immigration control and border control portrayed in the media in Scandinavian countries? Anja Naper from the Department of Journalism at Oslo and Akershus University College is coming to the IMER lunch seminar to present findings from her PhD project, in which she compares media coverage in the largest newspapers in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. These countries have chosen different approaches to border control. Are these different policies reflected in the media's perception and portrayal of border control?

THE ANNUAL NORWEGIAN SOCIOLOGY CONFERENCE: "MIGRATION/INTEGRATION"
 The association of sociologists in Norway, Norsk sosiologforening, have their annual conference – Vinterseminaret – on 3-5 of February 2017. This year, the topic of the conference will be "Migration/integration". Among the contributors in the main program are Susanne Bygnes from IMER Bergen/UiB, Arnfinn Midtbøen from ISF and Jon Horgen Friberg from Fafo. The conference is open to researchers without degrees in sociology as well. More information about the conference can be found here.
NEW PUBLICATIONS FROM IMER
- Review of a book from the IMER network: "Eksepsjonell velferd? Irregulære migranter i det norske velferdssamfunnet". How does the Norwegian welfare state deal with people who are not on the "inside" – irregular migrants? This question lies at the core of an anthology that was published last year, edited by Synnøve Bendixen and Christine Jacobsen from IMER, together with Karl Harald Søvig. The book was recently reviewed here by Aksel Hatland in Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning, who finds much to laud in the book.
- Jon Horgen Friberg and Olav Elgvin: "Breaking down trust: Somali Immigrants in the Norwegian Welfare System". How is institutional trust and belonging affected by interactions with the bureaucracy of the welfare state? Olav Elgvin from IMER, together with Jon Horgen Friberg from Fafo, investigate this in a study of Somali immigrant in Norway, recently published in Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning.
